Hi, I’m Avery Heeringa.
I am a Chicago-based journalist and communications specialist, with a passion for all things writing, music, and culture. I’ve written for a variety of publications — including the Chicago Reader, Melodic Magazine, Electrical Apparatus, and Off The Record Press. I’ve also gained valuable copywriting, PR, strategy, social media, graphic design and brand development experience in my tenure at Edelman.

JOURNALISM
My natural curiosity has led me to pursue journalistic experience and reporting roles for a variety of publications. Whether profiling musicians or covering the electromechanical industry, I’m committed to storytelling in creative and insightful ways that entertain and inform readers.
COPYWRITING
My work on brand campaigns and strategic communications has allowed me to gain valuable experience developing copy to be used in marketing, advertising and PR. Particularly, my work as account lead for the FullFace app, developed by Paulina Sanchez, allowed me to use my creativity to strengthen the brand message and awareness.
EDITING
I’ve gained extensive experience as an editor through editing Melodic Magazine‘s monthly print issues, fine-tuning 200-person newsletters, and proofing client materials for brand campaigns. I pride myself on my sharp eye and attention to detail to strengthen stories, messages and writer’s voices through edits.
Client Experience

What peers have to say
“One of Avery’s greatest strengths is his writing. He has a strong editorial instinct and an ability to adapt his voice to fit the needs of different brands… he demonstrated an ability to quickly understand the client’s brand voice and create content that felt authentic to it rather than simply well written.”

“Avery was great to work with; he not only had a positive attitude, a fun personality and was always eager to assist above and beyond his general duties. His attention to detail and willingness to ask questions while providing follow up made him a valuable member of SHOUT. Avery was able to handle various tasks assigned at the same time and executed them efficiently; he would be a great addition to any team.”
