Hi, I’m Avery Heeringa.
I recently graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in communication and journalism. I’ve written for a variety of publications — including the Chicago Reader, ChicagoTalks, The Columbia Chronicle, Melodic Magazine and Study Breaks Magazine. I’ve also gained experience in copywriting, advertising, concert photography, graphic design and brand development.

JOURNALISM
My natural curiosity has led me to pursue journalistic experience and reporting roles for a variety of publications. Whether reporting on local news, Columbia College’s administration or localizing national stories, I’m committed to storytelling in creative and insightful ways that serve communities.
COPYWRITING
My work on brand campaigns and strategic communications has allowed me to gain valuable experience developing copy to be used in marketing, advertising and PR. Particularly, my work as account lead for the FullFace app, developed by Paulina Sanchez, allowed me to use my creativity to strengthen the brand message and awareness.
EDITING
I’ve gained extensive experience as an editor through overseeing the publication ChicagoTalks as EIC, editing Melodic Magazine’s print issues and editing Columbia College’s communication department newsletter. I pride myself on my sharp eye and attention to detail to strengthen stories, messages and writer’s voices through edits.

“Along with his astute editorial skills and adherence to deadlines, Avery has a dynamic perspective on pop culture and willingness to grow and learn. Watching him progress as an writer, communicator, and thinker has been a joy and I look forward to seeing how and where he continues to excel in the future.”
– Roberto Soto, former Editor-in-Chief of Study Breaks Magazine
“Avery was great to work with; he not only had a positive attitude, a fun personality and was always eager to assist above and beyond his general duties. His attention to detail and willingness to ask questions while providing follow up made him a valuable member of SHOUT. Avery was able to handle various tasks assigned at the same time and executed them efficiently; he would be a great addition to any team.”
– James S. Juliano and Jill Evans La Penna, SHOUT Marketing & Media Relations
